LAWN TENNIS Late Challenges May Be Cancelled
WELLINGTON, February 7. Through tennis associations lodging challenges for late in the season, .some will miss their chance to play for the Wilding Shield this season. Four challenges have been received by the holders of the trophy, the Hutt Valley Association —from Canterbury, Auckland, Waikato and Otago—but the time available between the dates re- • quested by the challengers and the ; end of the season will allow only two . challenges to be met after the match i with Canterbury, if Hutt retains the • trophy. The match with Canterbury is teni tatively set down for February 28, and I March 1, and this will be the first contest for the Wilding Shield this sea- ; son. The Hutt Association had hopL ed to play at least one Wilding Shield 1 match before Christmas, but it is again faced with a programme at the tail ■ end of the season, as was the case last ’ year. The two challenges which will be accepted after the Canterbury match (if Hutt survives) will have to be determined by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. The end of the season for Wilding I Shield matches is March 31, or Easter Saturday, which falls on April 5 this year. Hutt Valley will make their next defence of the Nunneley Casket against Wellington on February 14 and 15, and if successful, will probably meet further challenges before the season closes. Tour Of New Zealand Cancelled (Rec. 11.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 8. The tennis team’s proposed tour of New Zealand has been cancelled because of transport difficulties.
