SUDDEN DEATH
NEW U.S. AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN WASHINGTON, Feb. 6. Mr * Max Gardner, the newlyappointed United States Ambassador to Britain, died to-day. The White House Secretary (Mr Charles Ross) said that his death was due to coronary thrombosis. Mr Gardner died in a New York hotel. He was to sail to-day in the liner America. Mr Ross said that Mr Truman was deeply .grieved and shocked. Mr Gardner was appointed a month ago to succeed Mr Averell Harriman, who is now Secretary of Commerce. He had never previously shown evidence of a heart condition.
