ASSISTANCE IN BRITISH FOUNDRIES EASING LABOUR SHORTAGE (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 18. As a temporary measure to ease ths labour shortage skilled Italian civilian foundry workers are being brought to Britain, said Mr. Ness Edwards, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, addressing a conference of the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers. Mr. Edwards added that the output of iron castings was only 2,000,000 tons yearly compared with 3,300,000 in 1938. the shortage was impeding Britain’s recovery. The men would be adequately safeguarded Ircm the introduction of the Italians, said Mr. Edwards, and the Italians would be returned . to Italy once the bottleneck in castings was removed.
