ELECTORAL CHANGES
INCREASE IN WESTLAND ROLL NUMBERS REJECTED APPLICATIONS. With the inclusion of portions of the old Buller electorate, under the recent boundary revisions, there has been a substantial increase in the number of electors in Westland.. When the main roll closed on September 13, the total number of names on the Westland roll was 12,790, compared with a total of 11,794 electors for the 1943 election. On that occasion, the main roll closed with a total of 10,253 names. -The supplementary roll is now. being .compiled and there is a fairly large number of applications for inclusion. However, many have had to be rejected, owing to being incompletely or incorrectly filled in. The district Registrar of Electors, Mr. W. M. Fraser, Hokitika, stated to-day that of 177 applications for inclusion on the roll received in one day this week, no fewer than 65 had to be rejected. The most common mistake made in filling in the application for enrolment is the crossing out of the line, “I have resided in New Zealand for one year.” The phrase actually means “one year or longer” but many people who have lived in New Zealand for many years cross it out, in the mistaken belief that it does not apply. The printed main rolls for Westland are not expected to be available before the middle of next month. A substantial increase in the number of electors is also expected in the new Buller electorate, which has absorbed a large part of Motueka. The number on the main roll has not yet been finally determined, but it is expected to be approximately 13,400, as compared with 9549 on the main roll for last election and a total, with the supplementary roll, of 10,619.
