SOLDIERS’ CEMETERY
PROPOSED SPECIAL PLOT AT GREYMOUTH SELECTION OF SITE Proposals for a portion of the Karoro cemetery to be set aside as a soldiers’ burial plot were considered at a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening. Mr. L. J. Sullivan, of the Department of Internal Affairs, who is the assistant officer in charge of wargraves, the Rev. T. G. Campbell, and Messrs. G. Batty and T. P. Ryan, representing the Greymouth branch of the Returned Services’ Association, met council members to discuss the proposals. The Mayor, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, presided, and Crs. F. F. Boustridge, T. Caldwell, H. Hutchinson and A. L. McKay were also present. This morning Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Ryan, two representatives of the Public Works Department, and the borough engineer, Mr. A. J. Fairmaid, visited the cemetery to consider the selection of a piece of ground. It is expected that the R.S.A. will, at the next meeting of the council, apply for a plot in the most recently-acquired • addition at the southern end of the cemetery to be set aside for soldiers. It is understood that the R.S.A. will be in favour of the plot being in the nature of a lawn cemetery. Financial assistance in the preparation and maintenance of the soldiers’ plot is expected to be forthcoming from the Department of Internal Affairs. Mr. Fairmaid said to-day that until negotiations have been completed no indication can be given of how long it is likely to be before the plan is put into operation, always provided the Borough Council approves of the proposals.
