ESCAPE FROM GAOL
THREE MEN HAVE BRIEF
-LIBERTY
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 6. Three men, who escaped from the Dunedin prison this morning, had only a brief period of liberty, being recaptured at 12.15 in a house in the hill suburb of Roslyn. They were taken by surprise and offered no resistance.
Forcing their way through a small lavatory window, the three men escaped shortly after 7.30. They are Louis James Egen, aged 20, James Robert Miller, aged 25, and David Mervyn Coats, aged 19. Egen was awaiting sentence on charges of theft of a car and false pretences at Timaru. Miller, who was committed to the Supreme Court yesterday in connection with the burglary of a city jewellery shop, is an English seaman who deserted from his ship. Coats was on remand on a charge of being idle and disorderly and was on parole from the Borstal when he was arrested.
The window through which the men escaped was 18 inches by nine inches. They apparently stripped in order to wriggle through and the last man passed their clothing over.
