ASSOCIATION Blackball Defeats Greymouth

In spite of atrocious ground conditions the match between Blackball and Greymouth on the Recreation Ground on Saturday was played at a fast pace and there was no let-up until the final whistle. The Greymouth full-backs. Larking and Hogg and Peate in goal, got through a heavy day’s work with credit. Blackball also defended ably and the Greymouth forwards found it difficult to .break through. , . The deciding factor was Blackball’s excellent positional play aifdj the Greymouth team was over-; shadowed in this. respect. The local forwards lacked dash and some.good opportunities were lost by crowding. A. Clark scored for Blackball in the first half and McGuire and Phillips took the score to 3-0 before the final- whistle. Mr. J. Wood was referee. Taylorville Beaten by Runanga Taylorville was soundly beaten by Runanga on the latter team’s home ground, by three goals to nil. The Runanga forwards dominated the play throughout and under pressure the Taylorville defence on two occasions deflected the ball, into its own goal. The ground was in a bad condition after the heavy rain Tout .the play was of a high standard. Runanga and Blackball are now equal in the Westland Cup competition and will play the final the week after the West Coast-Canter-bury match, which is scheduled for Saturday. Canterbury Beats Otago for Jones Cup (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Aug. 4. Otago, the holders, lost the Jones Cup to Canterbury by 4 goals to 1 on Saturday. Otago dominated, play in the first half-hour, during which at least six shots were missed narrowly. Canterbury scored twice towards the end of the first spell and Otago at no time thereafter looked like winning. V. Smith, the Canterbury centre-half, displayed fine generalship for Canterbury. Goals were scored by Dowker (2), McAnulty, and Smith. Otago’s goal was scored by Ryan.
