Swimming in America.
The first big post-war swimming event, the National Amateur Athletic Union’s senior men’s outdoor meet at San Diego, drew a record entry of m.ore than 200 from the United States, Hawaii, Mexico, and Cuba. The 1500 metre freestyle was won by the 15-year-old Jimmy McLane, of Phillips Academy, Massachusetts, in 19min 23.1 sec. Other results were: 200 metres freestyle, Bill Smith, of Hawaii University, 2min 14.3 sec; 300 metre relay, Ohio State, 3min 20.7 sec, an American record. McLane later followed up his earlier success by winning the 400 .metre freestyle in 4min 49.8 sec. Bill Smith, who in 1942 set the American record of'4min 39.6 sec'for this distance, was second. The 200 metre breaststroke was won by Jone Verdeur (Philadelphia) in 2min 44.3sec,—New York, August 4,
