TAXATION CUTS
INDIRECT LEVIES IN AUSTRALIA BUDGET PREDICTIONS CANBERRA, August 4. Cuts of £lB,ooo,ooo'a year in indirect taxation are expected in the next Federal Budget if the present Government is returned, according to a report which states that the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) hopes to introduce the Budget to the House of Representatives in November. Indirect taxation on petrol, tobacco, beer and spirits, the sales tax on manufactured goods and the postal charges are all likely to be affected. At present duties and sales tax add the following charges to non-essen-tial goods:— To a bottle of Scotch whisky, 12/-. To a bottle of Australian whisky, 8/-. To a packet of matches, 9id. To a gallon of petrol, lljd. To a packet of cigarettes, costing 1/8, 1/1. _
