FIRE ON LINER
DETECTIVES REQUESTED TO
INVESTIGATE SUSPICION OF_ SABOTAGE SYDNEY, Aug. 2. Fire broke out in a lounge on the port side of the promenade deck of the liner Orbita (15,495 tons), when she was steaming between Melbourne and Sydney early yesterday, with more than 200 passengers from England. Stewards put out the fire with buckets of water, and the ship berthed safely at Circular Quay, Sydney, this morning. 'Late last night the ship sent a radio message reciuesting the Sydney police to meet her and investigate the fire, because of a suspicion of sabotage. Before dawn, detectives were standing by in a launch ready to board ship, but she disregarded the launch and went straight to the wharf. The detectives interviewed _ the Sydney representative of the British Ministry of Transport (Commander Knight), who said that he believed that their services were no longer required. The ship’s captain verified this statement and the detectives left without pursuing their examination. Beyond saying that the fire could have been accidental, the captain refused to comment.
