TOWN PLANNING
MAIN CLAUSES OF SCHEME APPROVED DISCUSSION AT GREYMOUTH A suggestion that the area west of the railway line to Hokitika, including Herbert, Leonard and William streets, should be declared a light industrial area instead of a residential area as at present was made to the Greymouth Borough Council last evening by Mr. John Cox, of the Town Planning Office, Wellington, during a discussion on the council’s town planning scheme. He pointed out that the area was rapidly changing from one of residences to one. of factories. He also suggested that another small area, in the vicinity of Whall and Willis streets and up to Alexander terrace, could well be declared a general commercial area. Mr. Cox fully discussed the scheme drawn up by the council, pointing to certain minor alterations that - would effect an improvement. He advised that the Town Planning Board had tentatively approved of the plan with certain amendments. The most important clauses, however, had been approved. After discussing certain minor alterations, including those concerning the Herbert street and Whall street areas, Mr. Cox stated that when adjustments on these lines had been made, the plan could again be presented to the board and would be finally approved. The Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) presided at the meeting, and , also present were Councillors F. F. Boustridge, P. Blanchfield,. W. Herring, H. Hutchinson, J. B. Kent, G. R. Harker, J. E. Stokes, A. L. McKay T. Caldwell, T. G. Jamieson and Mr. H. E. Higgins (Grey County Council) and Mr. D. S. Kennedy (Greymouth Harbour Board). The. county council’s extra-urban town planning scheme was also briefly discussed.
