BOROUGH WORKS

MANY PROJECTS ARE IN HAND INSPECTION BY COUNCIL / Over 20 miles were covered by members of the Greymouth Borough Council in a comprehensive motor tour of the borough yesterday, to inspect works in’progress and others which are contemplated. Over 60 separate works were considered and in each case details were supplied by the engineer (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid).

Among the more important work's which' are to be undertaken shortly is the raising and tar-sealing of the road to Boddytown. Extensive improvements were recently carried out at Fairhall’s hill. On the south side of the hill, filling is necessary to eliminate flooding, and it is planned to complete this and to tar-seal the road to the borough boundary in the approaching season. The proposed continuation of Mount street to the hill site for the town clock was also inspected. Ten • chains of now road is required, rising to about 60 feet above the present end of Mount street, in the form of a semi-circle round the hill spur. The ultimate possibility for this road as a Summit road, joining across the hills with Freyberg terrace road (Tindale’s hill) was pointed out, by the engineer, during the inspection of Freyberg terrace. He said that most of the route would provide good going for construction, except for the piece between Murray and Puketahi streets, where there was little cover over the bare rock. Through Nikau valley construction would be relatively easy. At the Freyberg terrace end a bulldozer is at present engaged’ on the levelling of a parking and recreation area.

The site of the proposed public convenience at the .Children’s Park was also inspected. Subject to discussions to be held with the Grey Main School Committee, the council proposed to erect the building at the site of the old fire brigade reel house on Tainui street (now used as a tool shed). The new building would be approximately the same size as the reel house, which would be demolished.

Cemetery Extensions. , Considerable time was .spent at the cemetery, where, as a preliminary to providing two extra rows of graves on the east side, a considerable amount of work has already been carried out. New plans explained by the engineer include a drainage system to lower the sub-soil water level and an entirely new entrance to the cemetery from Chesterfield street (the northern boundary of the cemetery reserve). ■ In the same area, it was pointed out that the abattoir paddock, between Shelley street and the railway line, had recently been bulldozed and sown in grass, and that if Morice’s paddock should be taken for a playing area, an excellent substitute paddock is available on the south side of Chesterfield street, opposite the stone crusher. The aerodrome road, providing a marine drive, has been extended southwards from the end of the aerodrome to the stone crusher. In the meantime, only the formation has been completed, and the new drive will not be available for general traffic until it is metalled. Considerable new reading work has also been completed in Blaketown, with the regrading and realigning of Packer s quay, the formation of Achilles street, and the extension of O'Grady street to provide access to the beach. A major work contemplated for Blaketown is the laying of a duplicate water main from Preston road, chiefly for fire-fighting purposes. The new main, it is proposed, would join the water system near the Preston road bridge. Cobden Street Formation.

In Cobden, it is intended to commence work shortly with a bulldozer on the formation of Richmond street, from Peel street to Nelson quay. The flooding -created by Range creek below Clifford street is also unde.v consideration, with a view to enlaiging the channel available to the creek. A similar work contemplated is a direct outlet for Taylor creek, by. diversion in Cardwell street. Other works commenced, or proposed, which were Viewed by the councillors, were: Puketahi street, ioformation; Alexander street, drainage, Easson's Hill slip; intersection Frcyberg terrace and Alexande, street; Freyberg terrace, access to Mr Tuck’s section; Blackmore street, water main through Stratford street; Tainui street, reconstruction; Lyaia street, etc., preparation lor tar-seal-ing* Marsden road, improvemen., Marlborough street, bridge ovei Sawyer’s creek; Leith crescent, concrete kerbing and channelling; Bridge street, bridge over Sawyer’s creek; High street, concrete kerbing and channelling, new water and gas mains; Buccleugh street, concrete kerbing and channelling; High street, parking place for hospital; Joyce crescent, concrete kerbing and channelling; Nelson street, footpath southwestern side; Byron street, piepartition for ■ tar sealing; Shakespeare street, reformation preparatory to tar sealing- Blake street, improvement; Preston Road, sewerage pumping station, duplicate water main to Blaketown; Bright street Range creek bridge; Hall street, bridge over Panoe creek: Ward street, bridge over* Range creek; Blackett street, footpath formation; Ashmore avenue, Ward street, footpaffi formation; Newcastle street, enlargement of culvert; Bright street, pipes under Memorial Bridge; Newcastle street, pipes under Nelson quay.
