STATE HOUSING
NEW STREET IN COBDEN SETTLEMENT
DEPARTMENT’S PLANS
At the request of the State Housing Department, the Greymouth Borough Council has opened a new street in Cobden, Fitzgerald street, and recent inquiries from the department in-
dicate that building will commence on the new frontages at
an early date. Fitzgerald street runs at the foot of the terrace on which Holland Settlement is built, on the seaward side, and when completed will have access from Dommett esplanade (North Beach) and ultimately from Ward street. About 12 chains of the street has been formed by a bulldozer under the direction of the council, and the Housing Department has let a contract for the clearing of the building sites. The council will instal 1400 feet of pipes for water reticulation as soon as a supply ot pipes is available. The Housing Department has also requested the council to construct a bridge over Range creek, at the north end of Hall street, to provide further access to sections, but the borough engineer (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid) . informed the council during its inspection yesterday that the inducement is not sufficient.” Other development in connection with housing extensions at Cobden is connected with private enterprise. Several sections have been levelled on Pitt street, which leads from Bright street to the Cobden cemetery, and access will be necessary. A Cobden resident, it is understood, plans to erect a bakery on the Pitt-Bright streets corner, and also several residences adjoining. . The Borough Council will probably have several building sites available for leasing in the neai future. The “wings” of Buxton Park, in Prefeton road, and several other similar sections, will probably be disposed 'of by auction shortly.
