HARBOUR INVESTIGATIONS

COMPLETION OF GREYMOUTH INSPECTIONS

BRITISH ENGINEERS DEPART

The two British engineers, Messrs. E. J. Buckton and A. J. Clark, today completed their investigations concerning the port of Greymouth and other proposed harbour sites in the district, and left by car for Christchurch. They were, accompanied by Mr. F. W. Furkert, formerly Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department. Messrs. Buckton and Clark arrived in New Zealand from London oyer three weeks ago, and began their investigations in Greymouth on July 17. After travelling as far south as Okarito to study harbour sites, they left the Grey district for Westport, and during the past week have been making investigations there, particularly in connection with the present harbour.

Returning to Greymouth yesterday, Messrs. Clark and Buckton met members of the Greymouth Harbour Board at a special meeting, and spoke to them about certain facts disclosed by their inspections. This morning they spent some time with the Greymouth Harbour Board engineer, Mr. D. S. Kennedy, and they left this afternoon for Christchurch. It was originally intended that they travel by plane to Christchurch, but bad weather on the east coast caused this arrangement to be cancelled. After making an inspection of the Lyttelton harbour to-morrow, at the request of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the engineers will return by car to Westport on Sunday, and complete their work there. They will then leave for Nelson, where further harbour investigations will be carried out, and they then will go to Wellington, where the data collected wih be studied, and, possibly, a preliniinary report made.' If time permits, an inspection of the harbour at Tauranga will be made. The visiting engineers have arranged to return to England by September 7, so that their departure will probably take place towards the end of this month. It is not likely that any other harbours will be inspected, though numerous boards have made requests for the services of the visitors. .
