AUSTRALIAN UNIONS CLAIM VICTORY

Australian trade unionists already regarded the 40-hour week as being “psychologically won,” and thought that reference of the question to the Arbitration Court next month was little more than a formality, said the secretary of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions at the Labour Party’s Easter conference. “This is not intended as a threat to the court,” he said, “but if the 40hour week is not granted by the Arbitration Court the trade union movement, will take up the struggle, and it will be a long, bitter one until we achieve our objective.”' The conference pledged its support to the council in its demand for the immediate introduction of the 40hour week, congratulated the Victorian Labour Government for its action in intervening in support of the trades unions’ case and expressed appreciation of the Government’s assistance.
