BOXING Visiting Amateurs Beaten

West Coast Successes at Tournament

The amateur boxers from Dick Dunn’s Wellington school did not fare well in their matches against West Coast boxers at the Greymouth Town Hall on Saturday night. The visitors won only one fight and secured three draws (including one against, a Canterbury man), while the West Coasters were successful in five contests. In spite of some of the bouts being won quickly it was a night of interesting and at times, high-class boxing, and the performances of the West Coast boys showed that the standard in the province is high. Keen interest was taken in the meeting of J. Boddy (West Coast and Canterbury lightweight champion) and C. Adams (AVellington) „ but Boddy, though conceding 51b in weight, and some height, soon broke through his opponent’s defence arid won on a technical knock-out in the second round. Boddy enhanced an already imposing record. M. Tuck, J. Finlay and B. Eder all won easily, Eder winning two. L. ! Domney (Wellington) gave an attractive display of boxing in his bout with J. Musson (Canterbury), and might have been a little unlucky not to secure the decision, the referee awarding a draw. Details of the various bouts were as follows: — B. Eder (Dobson) 9.0 beat F.,Nolan (Wellington) 9.2 on a technical knock-out in the first round, displaying all-round superiority. J. Finlay (Greymouth) 7.12 easily beat T. Scaife (Wellington) 8.0 on points, after a good display. M. Tuck (Nelson Creek) 9.7 beat M. Sproule (AVellington) 9.2 on points, Tuck being the heavier puncher and a superior boxer. D. Philp (Wellington) 7.9 beat V. Tuck (Nelson Creek 7.7 on a technical knock-out in the. first round. Tuck injured one of his knees and was unable to continue. J. Boddy (Greymouth) 9.5 beat C. Adams (Wellington) 9.10 on a technical knock-out in the second round, the referee crowning Boddy after Adams had been knocked down three times. „ . K. Doolana (Blackball) 8.10 and D Philp (Wellington) 8.8 drew after a fairly even bout, though Philp appeared to be the better boxer against a young and inexperienced opponent. L. Domney (Wellington) 10.3 and J. Musson (Christchurch) 9.10 drew after an interesting bout in which clever boxing on the part of Domney was the principal feature. Few decisive blows were struck, though Domney used a good straight left. N. Curtis (Cobden) 8.0 and D. Philp (Wellington) 7.9 fought a draw, and excellent contest bringing warm applause for the two boys. B. Eder (Dobson) 9.0 beat N. Stewart (Wellington) 8.11 on points after a good bout in which Eder had the better of his opponent throughout, and showed himself a strong twofisted fighter. In bouts between West Coast contestants: H. Tuck 11.4 defeated J. Hillier, 11.3 on points, the decision receiving a mixed reception. C. Curtis, 6.7, beat R. Blacktopp, 6.7 on a technical knock-out in the round. W. Fraser, 10.2 beat T. Munden. 9.11 on a technical knock-out m the second round; K. McMillan, 7.11 beat J. Bell, 7.11 on points. The referees were Messrs I*, Bell and T. Croft.
