RUGBY FOOTBALL Celtic Beats Marist, Christchurch
The Rugby football season was opened on Saturday in the West Coast Union’s ‘district with practice matches. The weather was ideal and the grounds were in first-class order. In the principal matches Cel-; tic (Greymouth) seniors defeated Marist (Christchurch) at Rugby Park by 21 points-to six, and. Hokitika defeated Linwood at Cass Square, Hokitika, by 21 points to nine. Neither of the visiting teams was at full strength. There ■ was a good attendance at Rugby Park, where Celtic and Marist provided a bright game in which, the speed and penetration of the home backs were the deciding factors. The Marist forwards played well against a heavier pack, but their backs, of whom only two were in last year’s champion team, were unable to cope with the speedy Celtic rearguard, who were well supplied .with the ball. Tries were scored for Celtic by W. Millett, L. Silcock, K. Rea, and T. R. O’Callaghan. The lastnamed converted three and also kicked a goal from a penalty. C. Walklin kicked two goals from penalties for Marist. On the No. 2 ground at Rugby Park, United defeated Star seniors by 14 points to five. Blaketown and Cobden seniors had a “scratch” practice game at Cobden Domain. Celtic thirds defeated Cobden by 15 points to three.
