ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE.— Now Showing: “Tarzan and the Amazons,” starring Johnny Weismuller and Brenda Joyce. Newest and most exciting of Tarzan’s breath-taking filmic adventures, “Tarzan and the Amazons,” will be screened at the Opera House to-night and on Saturday, with Johnny Weismuller again in familiar roles, and a new “Jane,” Brenda Joyce, in the feminine lead. On their way to meet Jane, returning from a trip to Europe, Tarzan, Boy and Chela rescue a wandering girl of the Amazon tribe (Shirley O’Hara), and Tarzan takes her back to the hidden country. On the same vessel with Jane is a party of archaeologists who, on learning of the existence of the Amazons, are anxious to visit them. Tarzan, respecting the women’s desire for seclusion, refuses to guide the party. The explorers, however, persuade Boy to show them the way, and they are all captured and sentenced to lifelong slavery by the Amazons. Their efforts to escape, and Tarzan’s rescue of his son, form the stirring climax of the fast-paced picture which is said to be the most exciting of the series.

REGENT THEATRE —Finally Tonight: “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay.” Commencing Monday: “Hollywood Canteen.”

In October, 1942, Hollywood opened its doors to servicemen in every branch of the Allied forces. The happiness it brought the boys, the lonely hours it helped erase, the laughter it provokect from dried up hearts is as immeasurable as the sands along the shore. During the war nobody but members of the forces was admitted, but now Warner Bros, have transplanted it to the screen to give everybody an opportunity to see, and hear what was originally intended as “entertainment for the boys.” Every star of the fabulous canteen makes an appearance; every act that made the canteen famous, is to be found in this two hours of sterling entertainment. The screen’s top stars do .not play roles but merely re-live performances given so many times before for so many boys. “Hollywood Canteen” is the laughing, dancing story of two soldiers and the loves they find in make-believe Hollywood. Throughout the story is woven the warmth and charm of the Canteen, spiced with the delightful performanc.es of the fifty stars and entertainers.
