SYDNEY WHARVES

DISPUTESAND RAIN CAUSE CONGESTION MUCH PRODUCE HELD UP (Rec. 11.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 18. As a result of a waterside dispute 12 ships were immobilised and 17 others worked short-handed yesterday until heavy rain brought nearly all work to a standstill. The Waterside Workers’ Federation has now instructed all men to accept any jobs offering, and if the weather had been fine to-day the position would have been back to normal. Heavy rain set in before daylight., however, and it appears as if much wharf work will be impossible. The position is regarded as serious, for rain and strikes have interfered with loading for nearly a week, and produce keeps piling up in the warehouses and on the wharves.

A priority committee is meeting to determine which ships shall be worked over the Easter holidays.
