Brigadier R. C. Queree, C.8.E., New Zealand Artillery, is appointed commander of the artillery in the 2nd New Zealand Division, vice Temporary Colonel G. J. O. Stewart, D. 5.0., who has been appointed commanding officer of a New Zealand Field Regiment, with his permanent rank of Lieu-tenant-Colonel. —P.A.

Moscow radio announced the death after a long illness of Lieut.-General Alexander Scherbakov, Assistant Commissar for Defence who was Secretary of the Central Committee of the Russian All Union Communist Party, and was also head of the Political Department of the Red Army.

Lieut.-General James Doolittle, Commander of the Eighth United States Army Air Force, who led the first air raid on the Japanese capital, was invested by the King with the insignia of an Honorary Knight Commander of the Bath at the Eighth Air Force Headquarters. The Queen and a group of United States Air Force Generals and other senior officers attended the ceremony.—B.O.W.

Misses C. and E. Gibson left, this morning, for Wellington, where they will reside. Miss C. Gibson, who was a member of the staff of the Rehabilitation Department, Greymouth, was, yesterday, farewelled by co-workers and made a presentation. Miss E. Gibson was similarly farewelled by fellow-mem-bers of the staff of the Public Trust Office, Greymouth.

Advice has been received in Wellington from Rome of the appointment of the Very Rev. Father T. M. Heffernan, S.M., to the position of Provincial of the Society of Mary in New Zealand. Father Heffernan relinquished the position of parish priest at St. Mary’s Church, Christchurch, at the beginning of this year, to take the office of master of second novices at the Scholasticate, Greenmeadows. He now succeeds the Very Rev. Dr. Geaney, whose term of office has expired.

Miss M. Tyson, whose marriage will take place this afternoon, was met by members of the staff and representatives of the committee of the Runanga Co-operative Society and was presented with several gifts, including a tea service, and linen and blankets. For the staff Mr. T. Bowes made the presentation and for the committee and the Society, Mr. F. Oakley. The Runanga R.S.A. also met Miss Tyson, and on their behalf Mr. G. English presented her with a gift.
