RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. November 11: Napier Park. November 11: Avondale.

TROTTING.

Nov. 11:—Metropolitan.

METROPOLITAN TROTS BRONZE EAGLE WINS CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. Making his second appearance in a New Zealand Cup field, Bronze Eagle, trained by R. B. Berry and driven by the former Australian reinsman, G. B. Noble, won the New Zealand Cup to-day. There was an exciting finish after a brilliant exhibition of pacing, which revealed exceptional sped and stamina. Interest in the race was the keenest for many years and when the Cup was run the crowd was posibly the biggest ever seen on the Addington course. The investments on the race, £31,760, were better than the previous record of £30,836, put through on the race last year, and second only to the £32,000 odd handled on the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie. The sum of £31,760 invested on the Cup was a record, and the machined handled £154,064/10/- for the day, £12,853 more than last year’s total of £141,211/10/-, the previous record for the South Island.

The racing in the early events was all done on the outside of the track, which provided slow going, but as the harrows were introduced and the air got into the track the area of reasonably good going was extended. At no stage, however, would the horses handle the inside of the track with any effect and the few that did attempt a run on the inner, lost ground. GREAT RACE FOR CUP.

[SPECIAL TO ‘•STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, November 4.

The New Zealand Cup was a great race and exciting right to the end. Integrity, Hardy Oak and Indian Clipper failed to begin correctly, and Gold Bar did not fill his hopples as quickly as he usually does. Shadow Maid at once shot to the front, several lengths ahead of Clockwork and Burt Scott, while the back markers, Haughty and Pacing Power, both began smartly and soon ran past the slow beginners. At the end of the first quarter, Gold Bar had reached the front. At the end of a mile Gold Bar was still setting a merry pace and there was not much change in the order, excepting that Haughty had improved her position, and commencing the last round she was in sixth place behind Gold Bar, Countless, Shadow Maid, Burt Scott, and Clockwork, while trailing closely were the stable-mates, Bronze Eagle and Pacing Power, Loyal Friend and Integrity, who had made up ground with a brilliant burst of speed. Half a mile from home the race commenced in earnest. Countless reduced Gold Bar’s lead to two lengths at the three furlongs and closely following were Haughty, Clockwork, Bronze Eagle, Loyal Friend, and Pacing Power. Rounding the top turn Haughty and Pacing Power followed the leader, Gold Bar, and as the straight was reached the three were practically on terms. Haughty then took the lead, and Pacing Power tackled her. Haughty’s struggle was short-lived, and Pacing Power was acclaimed the winner. Integrity coming with a great run, wrested the lead from Pacing Power a furlong from home. At this stage, Bronze Eagle shot up on the inside, and staying on brilliantly, he was too good for Integrity, and won by a length and a half, while three lengths away was Pacing Power, who in turn was four lengths ahead of Countless, Haughty a head away, fifth, being ® followed by Shadow Maid, Clockwork, Gold Bar, Horse Power, Loyal Friend, Burt Scott, Hardy Oak, Parshall, and Indian Clipper. Sectional times were as follows:— Quarter-mile 3G 2-ssec, half-mile 1.7 2-5, six furlongs 1.34 1-5, mile 2.15 2-5, mile and a quarter 2.48 4-5, and mile and a half 3.21. Considering the inside horses were at least three sulky-widths from the rails the time registered, from start to finish, was good. The failure of Indian Clipper and Integrity in the early stages might have taken some interest out of the race, and on the actual running it seems that Integrity may have been unlucky. At the end of six furlongs he was at the tail of the field and with a round to go he still had nine horses in front of him. Lie put in a great last

half-mile, and while he defeated Pacing Power he had no chance when Bronze Eagle put in his last claim.

The worst demonstration ever associated with a classic race in Australia, followed San Martin’s win in the Victoria Derby run at Flemington on Saturday. Beaten when favourite in several races, San Martin had previously won only two minor events. Ridden in the Derby by the champion jockey, A. Breasley, San Mai tin made' a brilliant run over the last five furlongs and demoralised the field. With a furlong to go San Martin shot clear ana although New Yorker ,challenged strongly, he won by over two lengths. The owner of San Martin, Mr. G. R. Nicholas, said he could not understand the demonstration. The horse had run in six races and only once had been out oi a place.
