BOWLING
RINKS MATCHES DUNEDIN, January 20. Heavy rain in the early hours of Ihe morning made the postponement of the morning games necessary. The rain ceased about 10 a.m. and play was resumed at 1 p.m. in mild conditions with the greens in good order, although a little heavy. In order to accommodate the final two rounds in the afternoon, the games were restricted to 21 ends each, with a time limit of two hours and a-quarter. P. Munn, skip of the champion rink in. 1941, has shown in all the games that he has with him a strong combination. He never looked like losing any of the eight games. The only other quartet to win eight games was the Taieri four, skipped by. S. Riach, who had the distinction of winning all his games in section play in each of the three competitions. He scored a runaway win by 30—6 against W. R. Sprosen (Linwood) in the seventh round, but he had a close call against W. Gilbert (Kelburn) in the last game, which he won, 18—17. Among the teams with seven wins is another Canterbury four, skipped by exchampion R. Haworth, who had little difficulty in winning both games, yesterday. -L Veitch’s Dunedin four scored two good wins. They defeated R. A. Barnsdale (Christchurch), 18 — 16, and in the eighth round won an exciting game against M. J. Squire (Hawera). By a margin of one point j_l Wilson’s Mt. Eden team met its second defeat in the seventh round at the hands of T. F. Mitchell (Blenheim), 19—13, but the Aucklanders won the last game fairly comfortably. Four teams qualified in this section, but one of those eliminated was L.’ W. Besley’s New Brighton quartet, which was runner-up to Munn, last year. Mitchell beat Besley igl7. G. O. Grant’s Invercargill four lost only one game, suffering a lapse from form in the eighth round, in which he was defeated by J. Glover (St. John’s, Wanganui), 22 — 13. The Southerners, however, finished at the head of their section. Several Dunedin teams won seven games, and A. S. McDougall’s Caversham four, which won both its games yesterday, headed its section. .Also qualifying were T. Gray (Kelburn) and ,L Scott (Dunedin). G. A. Dears fCSarlton) required to win his fast game to qualify, but W. Efford (Edgeware) put him out of the competition by winning, 21—19. A. W. MacDonald (Balmacewen), who also suffered only one loss, defeated J. R. Smith’s Elmwood four, 23—16, in the seventh round, and though Smith defeated J. C. Taplin (Auckland Transport) 16—10 in his last game he failed to qualify. L. J, Edwards (Balclutha) went right through the competition undefeated until he met J. Hutchison (Dunedin) in the last round. Hutchison, winning, 25—16. N. Donaldson (Ponsonby) is probably one of the youngest skips in the competition, but he has shown rhe judgment of ;i veteran in most of his games. Yosletday he defeated J. V.’. Stephenson (Nelson) 23—8 in the seventh round and finished up with a win c-.-cr C. Spearman (Chris;chiirhh U.S.A.) D.v a narrow margin iff on? point. nUFANCA PAIRS WIN.
