GREY RESIDENT BEFORE COURT.

, Appearing before Mr. G.: G. Chisholm, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, at Greymouth, to-day, Daniel McCarthy, Tainui Street, Greymouth, described as a bookmaker, was charged that, on August 12, 1941, at Greymouth, he did use the premises situated at 5, Boundary Street, as a Common garbing house. Mr, C. R. McGinley, for accused, asked that he be remanded until Monday, and that he be allowed bail in his own recognisance. In reply to the. S.M., Senior-Ser-geant Bonisch, for. the. police, said he had no objection to the.remand, and would not ask for substantial bail. Accused was a well-known citizen of the town, and there was not much doubt that he would appear. The S.M.: Do you think I should agree to the request for bail on his own recognisance, without surety? Senior-Sergeant Bonisch: I understand that there is a surety in' Court, and you could make a nominal surety. The remand until next Monday was granted. Accused was allowed hail in his own recognisance of £5O and one surety of £5O.
