KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers), presided at the monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, the following councillors being present:—Crs. Little, Wise, Lawrence, Murphy and McLean. The District Engineer wrote regarding the condition of the Taramakau bridge, and suggesting that the council restrict the loads on same. A further letter was read concerning, construction and maintenance of footpaths on main highways.—Resolved that the Town Clerk write to the engieenr, asking him to confer with the council on both matters.

The secretary of the Westland Centennial Council wrote offering copies of “Old Westland” at 36/- per dozen. —No action taken.

The general secretary of the Westland Centennial Committee wrote, asking for date or dates on which celebrations were held in the Kumara centre, together with the itemised list of events, to show clearly the nature of the celebrations. —The Town j Clerk to supply information. It was resolved that the Forestry ■ Department be asked to supply the council with 300 trees for planting on the recreation ground. The secretary of the Westland Hospital Board wrote, enclosing copy of estimated receipts and payments for the year ending 31/3/41; also a copy of same for the preceding year. The levy for the current year was fixed at £B9/5/7. It was resolved that a copy of New Zealand Statutes be purchased; that the sum of £l/1/- be voted to the fund being raised as a presentation to Mr D. J. Evans for his work in organising in connection with the New Zealand Centennial; that an ex- . amination be made of the pipe-line, and a report submitted to the council; that Mr Hanna’s account be paid, subject to same being in order. ' The Mayor said that what work was still proceeding in repairs to the tunnel at Dillmans, little progress was being made, and with the object of speeding up the work, it was decided that a letter be written to the Minister of Mines, pointing out the danger to the town through lack of water. /

Reports were received from the various chairmen of committees, on works carried out during the month. Accounts amounting to £175/2/9 were passed for payment.
