The Duchess of Kent received a bouquet of NeAV Zealand floAvers from Kew Gardens, at the all-New Zealand matinee, Avhich, according to Sir Horace Walpole, set new West End records for low expenses and high receipts, namely, £5,329. Leslie Henson Avas the only Englishman on the programme. He auctioned David Low’s drawings, which were executed on the stage, also Harry Rountree’s drawing of a Neiv Zealand soldier, and a plang canvas for a portrait to be painted by Oswald Birley. which fetched 250 guineas out of a total of £354.
Songs were contributed by members of the New Zealand anti-tank unit. Members of the staff of New Zealand House gave hakas, led by Tawera Moana. The orchestra, played a speciallywritten overture by Douglas Lilburn. Other artists, in addition to those cabled on March 19, were Eileen Driscoll, Hubert Carta, Arnold Trowell, Kathleen Levi, Hinemoa Rosieur, Denis Dowling and Stella Murray. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon received the Duchess of Kent.
