[BBITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.]
(Received November 3, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, November 2.
The effect of the war on retail trade is exaihiiied in the Board of Trade Journal, which publishes September statistics prepared by the Bank of England. The money value of daily sales reported in that month was 13.9 per cent, higher in 1939, compared with 1938. The increase amounted to 20 per cent, or more in the four provincial areas of England and Wales, and 12.3 per cent, in Scotland. In contrast to the provinces, however, London, where trade was adversely affected by the evacuation of population, transport difficulties, and other factors, showed a considerable drop of 27.4 per cent., and a small rise of 1.9 per cent, in suburban areas.
