MR. KILKENNY DEFEATED

“ WESTPORT,.Qctobef 31. ' The election ' for/ the Mayoralty of Westport, due. to Mr. John Kilkenny recently was held tp-day, keen- interest ‘ being taken in the. contest. Mr. "J. M. Robertson," a former Councillor .and Deputy-Mayor, -.was nominated for the position, and Mr. Kilkenny hqd, at the request of citizens',’, allowed 'himself to be ‘.again nominated.' The result "was the election of. Mr. Robertson, which, though the ( returns are incomplete; is apparently assured.. Following are the details of the voting :t— ■ ■ Booth. Robertson. Kilkenny.

There were six informal votes, while there still remain to be counted 395 declaration votes. Speaking after the result was announced,-' Mr. Kilkenny thanked all who had supported him. It appeared from the figures, however, that the majority of the electors did not wish that he should continue in the Mayoral office. Apart, therefore, from any chance that the present result might be altered by the counting of the declaration votes, he wished to extend to Mr. Robertson his congratulations upon winning thb election. Mr. Kilkenny, after promising the Mayorelect his co-operation, called for cheers for Mr. Robertson, which were given by the gathering. Mr. Robertson, in returning thanks, said he would do all in his power to fulfil his duties. He could assure his opponent that he had not been responsible for the personal attacks made through the-Press during the past couple of weeks, and that he regretted such attacks. -He asked'for the cooperation of all.
