[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, October 17. Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, tori ayWililam H. Douglas was charged with driving a motor vehicle, without exercising due care and attention. As defendant is now a member of the Special Force at Burnham Camp, he was convicted and discharged. Desmond J. Scott, for exceeding the speed limit, was fined 10/-, with costs 10/-. Jack Mitchell, for driving a heavy motor-lorry at a speed in excess of that allowed by the regulations, was fined £l, with costs 10/-. Thomas R. Watson, for allowing 1G cows to wander on a public road, was fined' £2, with costs 12/-. Ernest I. Paine, for allowing one pig to wander, was fined 5/-, with costs 12/-, and for allowing a mare and foal to wander Hannah H. E. Banks was fined 10/-, with costs 10/-. Percy R. Hall, who did not. appear, was charged on three counts with exceeding the road classification, carrying on three occasions a load in excess of that for which his motor-lorry was licensed, and with failing to carry on a goods service lorry an inspection certificate. Defendant was convicted on all seven charges. For exceeding the road classification he was fined £1 on each charge, for carrying a load in excess of that allowed by his license he was fined £2, £l, and £5, the excess weights being IScwts, lton 9cwt.. and 1 ton IScwt. He was ordered to pay costs on each charge, 10/- on six, and 12/- ' n the seventh.

William Hempseed, Bazil Hempseei and Robert . Hempseed, trading as Hempseed Brothers, were charged with, exceeding the terms of their goods service license by conveying goods in an area other than that allotted to them by their license. The prosecution arose out of the cartage, of some mine timber. Defendants were convicted and ordered to pay costs. £l/16/-. The annual examinations under the Mining Act are being held at Reefton School of Mines. Five candidates are sitting for certificates in coal and metal mining subjects.
