Jeffries and Co. report as follows: —There was a total entry of 88 head of cattle at the Arahura sale on Monday, all of which were sold to a full attendance of buyers at prices which must be considered as very satisfactory and quite equal to the good sale held a fortnight ago. Our entry comprised 35 head from Gibb Bros, and the sales were as follow: — Six bullocks £lB/7/6, three bullocks £l7/2/6, two bullocks £l4/2/6, eight 2-year-old heifers £l3/7/6, two 2year heifers £l3/2/6, four 2-year heifers £l2/17/6, two 2-year heifers £ll/17/6 (average for 16 2-year-olds £l3/), one heifer £ll/17/6. The directors of Alloy Steel (New Zealand) Ltd., have declared an interim dividend, payable on October IS, of 31 per cent, for the half-year ended September 30. The Mutual Benefit Building Investment Society of Canterbury (Permanent) announces that a final dividend has been recommended of 3J per cent., making 6J per cent, for the year, payable on October 31. MINING. BARRYTOWN. During the first half of October, the Barrytown dredge ran 123 hours, and treated 44,000 cubic yards, for a return of 243 ounces of gold. RANIERI. During the first half of October, the Kanieri dredge ran 227 hours, and treated 104,000 cubic yards, for a return of 571 ounces of gold. ARAHURA. During the first half of October, the Arahura dredge ran 258 hours and treated 174,000 cubic yards, for a return of 544 ounces of gold. RIMU FLAT. Rimu Flat dredge return on Monday was 21Soz 14dwts of gold for about 123 hours, from 55,374 yards. MOSSY CREEK. The Mossy Creek return to October 16 is 51oz 7dwt - from 9812 yards dredged in 234 hours. NGAHERE DREDGE. It is expected that the Ngahere Company’s big dredge, near Blackball, will commence digging about the middle of December. The assembly is approaching completion and the bucket line will be finished this week. NEW RIVER PROFIT. A net profit of £5931 was made by the New Rivei- Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., in the year ended July 31. Total gold won was 18420 z recovered at an average of 420 z 16dwt a working week, and representing an average recovery of 10.7 d a yard before export tax of £1132. In the p.cvious year 14240 z were won at a weekly average of 31oz 15dwt and a return of 5.7 d a yard. The average price received by the company this year a. crude ounce after paying export tax was £7/18/5, compared with £7/7/101 in the previous period. Working costs a yard, after allowing for £1465 depreciation on the dredge were 5.2 d. an increase of 1.5 d since the previous year. The increase was accounted for by the lesser yardage worked. During the year, report the directors, repayment of £1822 to secured directors was completed, and three dividends of Id each paid to shareholders. In addition a sum of £675 had been invested in inscribed stock. During August this amount was increased to £1470,

The dredge worked steadily throughout the year with the exception of two periods in February, March, and April, when eight weeks were lost through lack of water. Yardage totalled 351,250, compared with 448,000 in the previous year.
