PLUNKET SHIELD WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY [per press association.] WELLINGTON, January 1. Not for many years past has such effective bowling been seen on a batsman’s wicket as was revealed on the Basin , Reserve on Friday, when Wellington and Canterbury began their Plunket Shield match. Canterbury fell for 197, and when stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. Wellington had lost nine wickets for 206. The weather was ideal in the morning, but clouded over in the afternoon, and from 4 o’clock until stumps were drawn a drizzling rain fell, which hampered the Canterbury bowlers. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Otago and Auckland began at Eden Park to-day. The visitors batted first and scored 259 runs, Auckland replying with 16 for no wickets. Heavy rain in the early morning made it difficult for the bowlers to gain a proper foothold. Although the wicket was covered, play was delayed for three-quarters of an hour. When the match began rain was falling and this continued until the luncheon adjournment. O Reilly took three wickets for 56 runs. New South Wales have scored 33 for one wicket. At Adelaide, South Australia in its first innings against Victoria made 257 (Badcock 50, Whitington 81, Bradman 54, Fleetwood-Smith took eight wickets for 122 runs.
