SCHOOL BOXING

MARIST BROTHERS’ TOURNEY.

For the second series of elimination rounds in the Marist JJrother§’ School boding tournament, held in the Town Halt last evening, there was a large attendance, the ringside being crowded, and those present obviously enjoyed the evening’s sport. Forty-five bouts, each of two one-minute rounds, were staged in two and a-half hours, indicative of the splendid manner in which the tournament was organised and conducted by the Marist Brothers. Some promising material was seen amongst the boys, and the whirlwind, two-fisted tactics of some of the younger boys caused muph amusement. Interest was added to the contests by the inter-House competition, and the points gained for the evening were as follow, the total points for the two elimination rounds being given in parentheses:—St. Paul’s 54 (103); St. Columba’s 36 (56); St. Joseph’s 22 (57); St. Patrick’s 36 (56). The Marist Brothers were assisted in conducting the tournament by Messrs F. O’Neill, F. Bell and R. Williams (referees), E. O’Brien, G. Scott, B. Casey and J. Mathews (seconds), W. Larcombe and F. Birchfield (stewards) and A. Fraser (timekeeper). Prior to the concluding bout, Mr A. Beban, president of the Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Association, thanked those present for their attendance, and said that it was very gratifying to see the good work being done by the Marist Brothers. They would not have a slacker in the school, and boxing taught the boys to lead* clean, healthy lives. If they could only get the other schools in Greymouth to foster the sport as the Marist Brothers had done, it would be a great thing for boxing on the Coast. He congratulated the Marist Brothers on their good work, and expressed the hope that it would continue. The final rounds of the tournament will take place next month.
