The death is announced of one of Melbourne’s best-known barristers, a Chinese, William Ah Ket, aged 60.

Miss Maureen Beban has been selected by the Greymouth Borough Council for the position of temporary clerk, from nine applicants.

Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, is a patient in a Christchurch private hospital, where he was operated on for appendicitis. He is making a good recovery.

A London cablegram stated that Frances, daughter of former Wellington residents, the late F. B. Graham and Mrs. F. E. Robertson, is affianced to Mr. John Jellett, of Singapore.

The funeral of the late William Weaver took place this afternoon, at Karoro Cemetery. The services at deceased’s late residence, Marsden Road, and at the graveside, were conducted by Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn.

The death occurred suddenly at Wellington, yesterday, of Mr. George Lauchlau, aged 63, assistant generalmanager and distribution engineer of (he Municipal Electricity Department. He would have, retired from the service next year, after nearly 50 years of work in the development and advancement of Wellington. He was prominent in rowing, having been manager of the New. Zealand crew which went to Australia in 1935 — Press Assn.

Office staff of the Public Works Department, Wellington, in addition to engineers and others from outside districts, were present in large numbers at a farewell function in honour of Mr.’ C. J. McKenzie, who recently resigned on account of ill-health from the position of Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secre-tary of Public Works. Department presentations were made to Mr. McKenzie by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple), and tributes were also paid to him by Mr. J. Wood (who has succeeded Mr McKenzie as Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secre-tary), and Mr. F. S. Dysom District Engineer of the Department, at Auckland.—Press Assn.
