MOTOR RE-LICENSING

SIMPLER SYSTEM INSTITUTED

Registration of motor-vehicles for 1936-37 has commenced at post offices throughout New Zealand and the new plates must be affixed on June 1. The private motorist will find that the procedure for renewal of the license has been considerably simplified, only' half of the official form having to receive his attention. The licensing systems of over twenty countries were examined by the Motor Registration Branch of the Post Office, with the object of evolving the simplest effective form, and the questions which have now to be answered constitute the bare minimum.

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles states that firms and others owning several vehicles can assist Deputy Registrars if they prepare their relicensing forms early and present them for checking before the rush sets in at the end of the month. It has been decided not to request payment of the fees when a number-of relicensing forms are presented together, as the Detriment, recognises possible inconvenience in paying large amounts before the end of the month. Postmasters have been asked to check ljulk applications which are lodged early, assess the fees, assign the plates and amend the necessary records. The plates will be held until payment of the fees, and it is hoped that this procedure will avoid the necessity of employees of firms owning several vehicles being required to wait’ at post offices while the licensing applications are being checked bythe postal officials. Monthly details of motor-vehicle registrations have recently shown remarkable increases and the total number of live registrations on March 31 reached the record figure of 249,161.
