ST. COLUMBA CLUB

JUNIOR BRANCH MEETING. The annual meeting of the junior branch of the St. Columba Club was held in the club locms, last evening, there being an attendance of 25 boys while Rev. Brothers Anthony, Oswald and Maurice, and Mr J. I. Mcllroy (secretary of the senior club) were also present. Apologies tor absence were received from the clergy. Master James Beban presided. Addressing the meeting, the Rev. Brothers outlined the various phases of the Club’s activity, and stressed the benefits to be obtained by attending the various meetings. A review of the activities of the Club showed that the past year had been most successful. Officers were elected as follow: — President, Rev. Bro. Anthony; vicepresident, James Beban; secretary, T. Power; treasurer, G. Fairhall; librarian, K. O’Leary. A round-table debate was then held, the subject being “That cheap literature is beneficial to the people.” The judge, Rev. Bro. Anthony, awarded the contest to the affirmative side. At the next meeting, on May 22, a debate between members representing the various school-houses will be held, the subject set being “That the West Coast is behind the times.” It is hoped to have three separate debates in progress in different rooms. St. Mary’s Club (Hokitika) wrote, requesting that the debate for the Stuart Cup be held at an early date. The secretary was instructed to suggest a date after the school holidays, and to arrange for a suitable subject. An interesting syllabus has been arranged for this year, time being devoted to socials as 1 well as debating. Supper was served at the conclusion of the meeting.
