MISS CECILIA KEATING’S SUCCESS

The London office of the Associated Board.of the Royal Schools of Music, London, have advised the New Zealand Secretary, Mr E. C. Cachemailie, Wellington, that the following awards of exhibitions have been made, upon the results of the practical examinations of 1934:—

Cecilia Keating, Greymouth, tenable in violin at the Royal College of Music, London.

Edith Astall, .Hastings, tenable in pianoforte at the Royal College of Music, London. Janetta McStay, Invercargill, tenable. in pianoforte at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

The exhibition entitles the candidate to free tuition in the principal instrument, and in another subject which may be chosen by the exhibitioner, as well as theory, aurol training and composition. Miss Keating has the unique distinction of being, for three successive years, the highest ma'rked candidate in New’ Zealand, gaining the Dominion gold medal in the Intermediate; Advanced and Final Grades. In the Advanced Grade she also won the £l5 prize, and in the Final’ Grade the £lO prize as well as a free ehtry to L.A.B. practical examination, the regulation entry fee for which is five guineas. This is the ninth time the New Zealand gold or silver medal has been gained by a pupil of the Greymouth Convent, all previous winners being violin candidates. It is the fifth time for the monetary prize to be awarded to the same school, and the second time for an English exhibitioner to be chosen from one centre. Miss Mary Martin, now residing in Palmerston North, was also a pupil of the Greymouth. Convent when she was awarded an English Exhibition for violin Slaying. She has just finished a five years’ course at the Royal College of Music, London. Miss Cecilia Keating will also go to the Royal College to further her violin study. The normal two years’ course may, at th© discretion of the Board, be extended to three or fgur years., In a letter recently received from Miss Mary Martin, the writer stated that she intends giving a violin and song recital in Greymouth during the May vacation, when her friends will have the pleasure of noting the progress made, since she left Greymouth in March, 1930.
