BRUNNER NOTES

[OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.] The monthly meeting of the Brunner Council was held in the Borough Council Chambers, Wallsend on Saturday, the Mayor (Mr. J. Smeaton) presided. There were present Crs. J. Devlin, R. Fordham, A. McLagan, T. Harper, .1. Barber and W. Gntberlet. The Road Overseer’s report was adopted as satisfactory. S. A. Fry wrote asking for assistance from the unemployed men to form a track to a proposed prospecting area. —The Council decided to take no action.

The Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote regarding the opinion of the Council of remits referring to Section 69 of the Rating Act. The Council approved of the first three clauses, but was not in favour of exemption being extended from dwelling houses to all classes of buildings. The Highways Board advised of the width of highway bridges. Council accepted. The Temuka Borough Council wrote requesting representation to attend proposed conference in Wellington.—lt was decided that no delegate be sent to Wellington. The Council requested that the following be remits submitted to the Conference when held: (1) That sustenance should be. paid on the scale laid down originally by the Unemployment Act;-(2) That , all unemployed should be paid standard rates of pay as under Trade Unions and (3) That single and married men’s camps should be abolished. Mr. McPhie applied to build a dance hall in Wallsend. —Granted subject to Borough Building Inspector’s approval and in compliance with Borough ByLaws.

The Borough of Westport wrote requesting licensing fees amount for 1934.

Regarding a transfer from H. Prior to his brother F. G. Prior, the Clerk was requested to make the necessary alteration and transfer of the estate of Bertha Prior to the family was approved of. The Unemployment Board wrote requesting the unemployed men’s assistance in taking tallies during the traffic census.—The request was granted on condition that the Unemployment Board make up the wages to the standard rate.

The Department of Agriculture wrote advising of the grant of a slaughter house license to E. Gamble of Stillwater.

Accounts and wages amounting to £3ll were passed for payment. The matter of an increase in the workmen’s wages, which had been left over from the previous meeting was discussed, but it was decided that the matter should be left in abeyance for two months and then if the position justified it, all Councillors were in favour of a rise.

The question of unpaid rates was discussed. It was resolved that those people who are in arrears of rates and where it is obvious they are in a position to meet the account, be advised that unless satisfactory arrangements are made for payment legal proceedings will be taken for recovery. It was decided that the Clerk write to the Railways' Department requesting that a convenience be placed at the Wallsend Station for thd use of the travelling public. The Taylorville Senior Girls’ Basketball team journeyed to Ikamatua on Saturday to play a friendly match. They were defeated by 15 goals to 2. On their return journey they played against Ahaura and defeated them by 13 goals to 11. On their home ground on Sunday Taylorville were defeated by Waiuta by 7 goals to 2.
