SHIPPING SUBSIDIES

BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S ACTION

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT,] LONDON. May 12. The “Daily Telegraph” says: The Government’s plans to assist shipping are nearing completion. Two mam principles will be a State guarantee for tho construction of new ships designed for a specific purpose, and tho granting of fighting subsidies for a limited purpose, that of aiding ships on routes where there is direct competition with subsidised foreign lines. The Ministry, it says, has definitely rejected a proposal to give a general subsidy to tramp shipping. It has decided not to apply any discrimination against, foreign ships in the carriage of inter-imperial trade. It is believed, adds the “Telegraph” that the fighting subsidies in a limited form will provide Britain with a bargaining weapon for an all-round reduction of subsidies, as the British tariffs did in trade negotiations.
