SWIMMING

SCHOOLBOY’S FAST TIME.

[FEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.]

DUNEDIN, April 14.

Otago swimming supporters are enthusiastic ovei- W. J. Jarvis’s 50 yards record swim in 23 l-ssec. at the primary schools’ swimming carnival. The record having been made under official conditions, all the requirements were fulfilled, and the record is being forwarded to the New Zealand Council for its recognition. The Otago Centre is also urging Jarvis’s claims on the New Zealand Council for nomination in the New Zealand Empire Games team. A special attempt is being arranged for him next Thursday to attack Noel Crump’s New Zealand 100 yards record of 55 l-ssec.

Having regard to the slowness of Dunedin water, Jarvis’s time is claimed to be the fastest ever recorded in Australia or New Zealand. His first length was done in 14 2-ssec. This performance bears out his form in the 50 yards invitation scratch race at Christchurch, when he beat the record-holder, Whareaitu, in a time near to the record. Jarvis, who is 17 years of age, is still at the Otago Boys’ High School.
