MEETINGS TO COME.

April 19, 21. —Whang v arei. April 21. —Marton. April 21. —South Canterbury. April 21, 23. —Nelson. April 27, 28. —Pahiatua. April 27, 28. —Marlborough. April 28—Amberley. May 2, 3. —Egmont. May 10, 12. —Wanganui. May 11, 12.—Southland. May 19.—Rangitikei. Lady Frisco Dead: Waikato reports announce the death of the brood mare Lady Frisco, dam of White Comet, Paddon, Chang, and Grand Score. May Go to Melbourne: Mr. W. T. Hazlett’s jumper Apache, has been getting through useful tasks at Invercargill, and it is reported that he will shortly be shipped to Melbourne. Apache is rising 13 years. Could Not Start:

Carfex did not race on the second day at Avondale owing to a bruised foot. The trouble is not serious.

Slippery in the Paddock:

Slippery has been turned out for a couple of months.

Sister to Whittingham:

Wait and See, a winner at Avondale on Wednesday, is a sister to the Australian horse Whittingham, who recently finished third in the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap, which, according to all report, he should have won.

Showed No Form: Prince of Orange did not show much dash .at Avondale, and at present northern critics do' not regard him as a Great Northern prospect. Hurdle Recruit:

Mr. O. Nelson, who is partial to the jumping side of racing, may give Emotion a trial over hurdles during the coming season.

Improving: Curie was expected at Avondale, but he raced unluckily. Both he and Werehia are improving with racing and look like good winter prospects.

Recovered: Aga Khan and Diagano, both of whom have been off-colour lately, have resumed work at Hawera. Cough for Sale:

It is -.understood that Cough is on the private sale list. She has been a consistent stake winner for Mr. T. Baird.

Sir Simper’s Win: When Sii- Simper won at Williamstown on Easter Monday he was a wellbacked second favourite. It was Mr. Hazlett’s first success in Melbourne since Ruling Light won at Moonee Valley in December. According to all reports Sir Simper was very unlucky to have been beaten in a maiden plate on the opening day of the meeting.

Fine Speculation: Chatham was included among the first batch of yearlings sired by Windbag submitted to auction in the autumn of 1930. Mr. A. E. Blair bought him for 650 guineas, and, as his winnings in prize money amount to nearly £16,000, he has proved a fine speculation.

Gold Trail to Resume: Gold Trail has done exceptionally well of late, and it is fully believed that she has thrown off all signs of that dry cough which so seriously affected her since the autumn of her two-year-old career. She rejoins J. M. Cameron’s team at the end' of this week, and will be prepared for early spring racing.

Lucky Decision: It was only by the merest chance that Queen Helen was sent to Sydney for the Easter Plate, in which she beat Arachne. G. Jones, her trainer, understood that Arachne, who appeared to have a mortgage on the race, would not run. Queen Helen was entered only in the one race, and it was a plucky venture on the part of Mr. W. K. Kemball, her owner, who had the satisfaction of seeing his colours carried to victory. It is the most important race he has won in Australia.

Chatham Bettter Than Winooka: Is Chatham a better horse than Winooka? ? This argument has naturally cropped up following Chatham’s great victory in the Doncaster Handicay, says a Sydney writer. Ip such discussions there is always a tendency to favour the more recent champion. Chatham’s record in mile handicaps is certainly more imposing than Winooka’s. J. E. Pike has ridden both horses. He formed a very high opinion of Winooka; but after Chatham’s dazzling performance under his big weight he now says that Chatham is the greater of the two.

An Opinion: The difference between the best handicap performers of New Zealand and those of Australia was clearly indicated by the Doncaster result, says a Sydney paper. Golden Wings, who is a dominion star, was handicapped at 9.6 against Chatham’s 10.4, and yet Chatham defeated the New Zealander, which proves that the Australian standard is nearly a stone superior to that in New Zealand. Had Chatham jumped away well, he probably would have won with lengths to spare.

Firpt Wrack Class Trotter: The trotting mare First Wrack has a great record for consistency, in her last seventeen starts she has been fourteen times in the money. Last season she competed six imes for one win, two seconds, and three thirds. This season she has sported silk on eleven occasions for three wins, three seconds, and two thirds. First Wrack has developed into a beautiful mare, and she has won over all distances. She began her racing career as a two-year.-old, when she gained the admiration of the crowd at Ashburton by running third in a handicap race. That was on April 1, 1928.
