SUPREME COURT

SAVINGS’ BANK THEFTS. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, August 14. Jack Eric Robinson, 23, who pleaded guilty to forgery and attempted thefts, connected with Savings Bank transactions, was sentenced by Justice Herdman to three years reformative detention. His wife, Kathleen Marjorie Robinson, 21, for aiding and abetting her husband in the attempt to steal, was granted probation for two years. The Judge said he looked on the man as probably commencing a criminal career that was likely to be dangerous. The police officers had described him as a cunning criminal, with no regrets for his misdeeds. He was in a position of trust in the Savings Bank, and abused it. He stole £2OB by a trick, and detectives said he schemed to obtain £728. It might be he came under the influence of a domineering character, but that could not be considered. It appeared that the wife had acted under her husband’s influence. INVERCARGILL SESSIONS INVERCARGILL, August 14. The Supreme Court sessions opened to-day before Mr. Justice Kennedy, who commented on the disquieting amount of crime, particularly breaking and entering. He also commented on the fact that an unusual number of accidents had occurred in connection with motor vehicles. ‘‘Your roads are so ideal that an explanation must be sought in the lack of care, and, in the graver cases, in intoxication,” he said.
