MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TO-DAY’S GREYMOUTH CASES There was only a small list of cases dealt with at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth this morning, before Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M. Senior-Sergeant E. Quayle represented the police. Three first offenders found on licensed premises during prohibited hours were convicted and ordered to pay costs 10/-. A local resident was convicted and fined 10/- for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order against him. He was allowed thiee weeks in which to pay. On a charge of being found drunk in Mackay Street, he was convicted and discharged. Lou Mouatt and G. 0. Wilson, for operating unregistered motor vehicles (motor cycles), the former on July 20, and the latter on July 25, were each convicted and fined 10/- with costs 10/- and solicitors’ fee 10/6, on the information of Traffic Inspector A. E. Sloss, who was represented by Mr. T. F. Brosnan.

After hearing the evidence of George James O’Connor, of Dobson, the S.M., in a reserved decision, refused to confirm a provisional maintenance order made in Sydney against George James O'Connor for the payment of 30/- a week towards the maintenance of his wife, Jane Annie O’Connor, and their two children. The S.M. said that defendant had offered his wife and children a home, but they had gone to Sydney without his knowledge or permission. If it was a case of desertion, the desertion was on the wife’s part. Defendant was represented by Mr. J. IV. Hannan.
