CRUELTY ALLEGED
“BOBBY” CALF CONTROVERSY.
[PEE PBESB ASSOCIATION.]
NEW PLYMOUTH, October 14
Suggestions of there being cruelty during transport in the “bobby” calf industry, and that the British consumers should not buy this meat, were contained in a letter sent to an English paper for publication by the Taranaki branch of the S.P.C.A. This fact has been responsible for a spirited protest by the North Taranaki Farmers’ Union, which, to-day, had representatives of the S.P.C.A. at their meeting. A denial was given to the statement that there was any cruelty by the farmers. It was said the letter, if published, will have a disastrous effect on the “bobby” calf industry. The S.P.C.A. President said that the letter had already been posted, and the only thing that he could suggest was that the Union should also send a letter giving its viewpoint. The representatives of the two bodies agreed to confer.
