At the Hokitika Scout Room last evening, the No. 2 Scout Troop was inspected by Scout Commissioner Jermyn (of Greymouth) and he congratulated the boys on their appearance. He took the opportunity of presenting Scoutmaster A. Sutherland with the long service silver medal and complimented him on the work he has done for Scouting, and hoped he would continue in the movement. At the call of Scoutmaster A. Agnew, who accompanied Mr. Jermyn, and formerly of the Hokitika troop, hearty cheers were given for Scoutmaster Sutherland. Later the Commissioner met the members of the Committee and discussed various matters in connection with the troop. The matter of forming a Rover Troop was discussed. The Commissioner suggested that if some re-
tired seaman would instruct the boys, a troop of Sea Rovers could be formed here. Commissioner Jermyn was thanked for his visit and Scout Master Agnew received a cordial welcome from old associates. The annual school concert was held on Wednesday and Thursday nights of this week and good houses resulted. The organisers Miss E. J. Dale (of the Primary School) and Miss Anne P. At the Borough Council meeting last evening the foreman reported that Lake Kanieri was lower than it has been known before. A young man walked into a shop in Hokitika a cduple of days ago, and complained to the lady of “a raging toothache” and asked for. the loan or 15/- to have some teeth extracted, ro assure the lady of his bona tides he stated he was employed by a wellknown Sawmilling firm, and would be “drawing his pay in a couple of days. Thus assured, the lady handed oy er the 15/-. In a little while the “sufferer” came back with his mouth bandaged, stating that he required another 5/- for the dentist. But the lady had some doubt about the business; there was no blood about, no smell on anaesthetics and so refused the 5/- ani immediately instituted enquiries about the extractions which proved a fabrication.
