In the inaugural programme of the Madison Square Garden Corporation’s new outdoor, arena, “Strangler” Lewis won the so-called catch-as-catch-can world's heavyweight wrestling chamjpionship, throwing Dick Shikat, the German, with a headlock, after the contest had 'gone t one hour and six minutes. Twenty-five thousand witnessed the contest. The arena has been built to accommodate eighty thousand people, and it will be used for Jack Sharkey v. Max Schmeling heavyweight championship prize fight on June 21.
DAVIS CUP. NEW YORK, June 10. At Forest Hills, Van Ryn and Allison (U.S.A.) defeated Ivo Simons and Pernambuco (Brazil) 6/-, 6/1, 6/2. • ~;grey valley collie dog club.
• A meeting of the Grey Valley .Collie Dog Club was held last evening. Mr W. Clayton presided over a good Attendance. The Chairman congratulated Mr J. Brown on his recent success at the Methven trials. The Secretary of the Rcefton Chib wrote thanking the Grey Valley Club for their valuable assistance at the Reefton trials which were a great success, and hoped to be able to continue the trials .next year. The Secretary reported that the recent trials showed that the financial position was just square. The special prizes for the recent trials were allotted as follows: Gilbert Bros.’ gold medal for youngest novice competitor, Jack Clayton. Mr W. Clayton’s guinea to Mr H. Gilmer’s Joy, for local competitor unplaced gaining highest points. Mr J. Brown’s guinea to Mr G. Brigg’s May, for outside'dog gaining most points unplaced. Greymouth Evening Star, two half-yearly papers free was won by W. Dhnn (Kopara) and D. Gallagher (Waimaunga). Resolved that letters of appreciation be forwarded to Mr Innis as judge, Mrs O’Malley a'nd other members of ladies’ committee who attended to refreshments, Mr A. Bradley for running social, Mr W. O’Malley for free use of grounds and sheep and all donators of special prizes. Mr J. Me Lennan for his as-1 sistance at trials, also to the secretary Mr A. McDonnel for his excellent work throughout the trials.
