BOXING

JOHNNIE LECKIE’S GRIEVANCE [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, November 5. Johnnie Leckie did not receive one penny as a result of the title contest against Donovan at New Plymouth last Saturday, in which the former regained the championship. The Napier Boxing Association has lodged a complaint on Leckie’s behalf to the New Zealand Boxing Council. The contest was staged on a percentage basis and Leckie was informed when he went to collect his share that there was nothing for him, the whole of the proceeds being eaten up vin expenses.

The secretary of the Napier Association asserts that the rules governing such a contest are that the allocation is 50-50 on the gross receipts, after deducting amusement tax, and, as it was a £l2O house, there should be in the vicinity of £55 to divide between the boxers. A BONUS VOTED NEW PLYMOUTH, November 6. In repl} r to a protest from Napier that Johnnie Leckie received nothing from his title bout with Donovan at New Plymouth last Saturday, association officials stated that expenses totalling £9 were given to him and it had been agreed among members, though not confirmed by a meeting, that a bonus of £5O should be presented to the two contestants. The agreement signed by the parties stipulated that 75 per cent, of the net receipts should go to the boxers. The receipts totalled £126 and the expenses £l3O, so actually nothing was left for division. The assertion by the Napier secretary that there is another ruling governing percentage bouts is refuted. The only rule is that concerning specifically championship bouts such as the one in dispute, which states that the net purse is to be £5O. It was stated that the association automatically complied with this rule when deciding on the bonus. Leckie will probably receive £3O as his share. That receipts did not amount to more was not the fault of the association, nor the boxers, but a sign of the times, stated an official.
