RUNANGA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mr and Mrs J. Forrest, Mrs W. Fisher and Mrs J. Kennedy have left for Christchurch to attend the Cup race meeting. The following will represent Runanga tennis Club in their match with Colomba Club to be played at the local courts to-morrow:—Mrs M. R. Spiers, Misses I. Richmond, P. Thompson, Mrs D. O’Neill, Misses J. Pender, H._ Mossop, Messrs A. Winstanley, H. Ehnor, E. Pattinson, AV. Timlin, R. Gore, R. Tallentyre.

The monthly meeting of the school committee took place last evening. Present: Messrs R. J. Armstrong (Chairman), Wm. Armstrong, Jas. Isherwood, Wm. Hall, W. Hall, W. Robson, and J. Piner (secretary). Correspondence received from Canterbury Education Board submitting five names for position of Assistant Mistress. The committee recommended the appointment of Olive M. Duff. Inspector’s, Headmaster’s and Dental Nurse’s reports were received as highly satisfactory. It was decided to lay a concrete cricket pitch in the school grounds, also to recondition the basketball court. The chairman’s action in having the tanks cleaned out by Bossard and Co. was endorsed. The headmaster’s report for month ending October 30 stated:-—Roll: Boys 156; girls 129; total 285. During the month five pupils were admitted and throe withdrawn. The average attendance for the month was: Boys 147.5; girls J 23.4; total 270.9. The attendance you will observe is highly satisfactory. If we could average 10 more the school would go into another subgrade and we would be entitled to the services of another qualified assistant. The headmaster’s examination for 5.6 has, according to regulations been held, and on November 2nd and 3rd the supplementary examination for the Proficiency was commenced. The remaining subjects for the proficiency will be taken on December 3 by Inspector Irwin. During November a start will be made with the examination for promotion, for the rest of the school. Miss Booth continues to relieve in Miss Delaney’s position, and possibly she will remain in the position until the end of the year. We feel the need of extra assistance so much, that recently I wrote to the Board asking them to appoint two probationers for the year 1932. Work for the concert has been “rationed” amongst members of the staff and already some of th.e items are beginning to assume “shape.” The boys have had a cricket meeting and have decided to contribute a subscription towards the cost of material. At present though they are endeavouring to carry on with one bat. Would it be possible to divert some of the money, which I understand was set aside for another purpose, and put down a concrete pitch in the middle of the playground? The girls have taken up rounders very keenly, and when they become more proficient in the game we hope to arrange friendly matches with other schools. Mr Colvin, Inspector of dental clinic work inspected the clinic this week, and he asked me to assure your committee that the work done by Nurse Samways was of a high standard. He examined most of the mouths treated by the nurse, and he expressed himself as being well pleased with the results. He also expressed satisfaction at the interest taken in the Clinic by the Committee. Nurse would like the stove aluminumed, and” the notice board regarding hours erected.

Grounds: —The drain outside the Clinic frequently blocks and the boys have made frequent efforts to clear it, but with little success. Nothing has been done to tire girls’ lavatories. I would suggest that the Board be urged to carry out the necessary alterations during the Christmas vacation. The barrow has arrived and we are grateful for the Committee’s efforts in that direction. Mrs Webb is in urgent need of an axe—the other one has mysteriously disappeared.
