MODERN WHALING.

OSLO, August 8.
The first whaler to be fitted with an electric whale killing apparatus sails for the Antarctic on August 12. Professor Weber, representing the patentees, accompanies the expedition. He says that experiments have shown that whale can be killed instantly, and only a weak current is required.
NAVAL TRAINING.
LONDON, August 8.
The Admiralty announces that the Shropshire will leave the Mediterranean station in October foi’ Australia, in exchange for the cruisei “Canberra,” which will join the Modi terranean Fleet in December. x Her officers and men will get a full year’s experience in up-to-date cruiser tactics.
BUTCHERS’ FRAUD
LONDON, August 8
The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board prosecuted three Liverpool firms for selling Argentine lamb as New Zealand lamb. The Magistrate fined the principals £3 each with six guineas costs, and the assistants £2 each.
BRITAIN AND IRAK
LONDON, Aug. 8.
The Emir Fisal, at the conclusion 'of his London visit, said that nearly every outstanding question between Irak and Great Britain, had been settled. He hoped that means would be found for furthering the opening up of the country.

CAPETOWN, August 8.
The Trade Development Commission, consisting of Lord Kirkly, Sir William Noble, Sir Francis Joseph Robert Waddington, John Morgan, and a representative of the financial side of commerce, begins a tour of South Africa and Rhodesia on August 2G, to explore possibilities of improving British trade. ,
