MINISTERIAL SALARIES

CANBERRA, August 8.

The Senate, by fourteen votes to four, in the early hours of the morning, decided to request that a statutory measure be introduced to provide for a reduction of ten per cent, in the salaries of the Ministers and the members .of the Federal Parliament, and also of the members of the Public Service.

The Prime Minister, Mr Scullin, in the House of Representatives this afternoon, announced that he could • not accept the Senate’s request. The request, after a stormy debate, was rejected by the House on the voics. A conference was held between tho State and the House of, Representatives, and resulted in a compromise in regard to the contentious clauses of the Arbitration Bill. The Income Tax Bill, prescribing the new rates defined in the Budget, passed all stages to-day in the House of Representatives. The Senate to-day read a second time the Sales Tax Bill. ; r The- Houses of. Representatives : today approved the London Naval Treaty for the limitation and reduction of Naval armaments.
