LATE MESSAGES

HAMILTON, June 14.

Until further expense is justified by expert opinion other than the Public Works Department, nothing further should be done At Arapuni hydro electric scheme, according to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. The following resolution was framed last evening.—

Having regard to the fact that the Arapuni scheme has already absorbed three millions, that further heavy outlay of an unspecified amount is contemplated, that the confident anticipations of tho Public Works seem likely to be defeated by the course of events, it. is not certain that further capital expenditure is justified. This executive is unanimously of the opinion that the Government should immediately appoint a Commission, consisting of a Judge of the Supreme Court, and two independent engineering authorities in this class of work, for the purpose of inquiring into every aspect of the scheme and reporting on the course which should be followed in dealing with the present trouble. A series of subterranean rumblings was heard between T,e Awamutu and Rukuhia, last ' night. These were heard by a number of settlers about 6.30. resembling Indistinct underground explosions. The windows rattled, but there was no noticeable earth movement. Some became alarmed, lest these rumblings ■were connected with Arapuni.
