CRICKET

MARRIED MEN BEAT BACHELORS

The cricket season was brought to a close yesterday when a match was played at the Recreation Ground between teams representing married and single players in the competition. Married men were two short, Lord and Rose being substituted, but they prov-. ed too good for the bachelors, and won by 43 runs. Matthews and A. Barlow opened at the crease for the bachelors. The former made 11 before being clean-bowled, while A. Baldwin put his pads in front of the first ball delivered to him. Restieaux (20), and F. Baldwin (39) became associated, and their contributions, were the principal factors in the total for the innings being 89. A feature was that “Mr Extras” scored a duck. Jamieson was the most effective trundler for the Benedicts. The latter began badly as Denton was dismissed by a smart catch in the slips by Matthews before the scoring account was opened, while when 2 was up Bayley was bowled by Baldwin and then fell back over his wickets. Mclntosh (23) and Delaney (14) made the married men’s chances appear reasonably good, and when Casey got to work he soon wiped off the deficit. Then he lashed out and lifted foux’ sixers and some boundaries, being unbeaten at the finish with a tally of 55 runs. The scores were as follow: —
